HOW THE RANKS WORK:
SUMMARY:  This is NOT a ranking of perceived talent, or who might beat who, or who is closest to title contention in their organization.  This is an evaluation of which fighters have the best collection of success against a chain of other successful fighters in the past 3 years.  Only matches fought in this division will affect a fighter's rank in this division.  You move up the list by having a successful record against opponents with successful records..
STEP 1:  Every fighter is given a value for his wins, losses and draws in the last 3 years, where he weighed within the range of this division.  The value for each result is based on the success rate of the opponent, their opponents, their opponents, and so on down the line.  Fighters remain connected until their fight goes beyond the 3 year examination period.  As a fighter becomes further-defined by fights, so too, do all of his recent opponents.    Step 1 establishes a list of active fighters with a collection of quality results.  Depending on the depth of the division, it usually takes at least 3 solid fight results to make what is known as the "stats 400" list, an openweight list of fighters ranked under this system.  The complete list can be found at
http://www.mmaranks.com/stats
STEP 2:  Every fighter is calculated in a similar manner as step 1, but this time, any wins against fighters who are not on the "stats 400" list are worth zero.  Step 2 puts the focus on quality wins, while still factoring in losses.  All "stats 400" fighters will be ranked before fighters not in the top 400.
STEP 3: Panel members vote to modify the values attached to any fights that they feel need intangible factors added to them.  Examples include indecisive or poor  judging, erroneus referee decisions, no contests, disaqualifications, and other situations where the result doesn't tell the whole story.  If you are interested in these discussions, and becoming a panel member, you can sign in at
