Welcome to mmaranks.com, now offering two different types of ranking formats.

FORMAT #1   FORMAT #2
This format is in keeping with the style of rankings/standings that are produced by essentially every sport in the world.  Each fighter is ranked based on their collection of results from a specific time period.    This format is a tier system that uses singular fight results in chronological order to move competitors up and down a "ranking ladder".  This is a simple leapfrog system that no other sport really uses, but is popular amongst a lot of MMA enthusiasts.
We are using an MMA-adapted version of the format that is used in other professional stat-based sports rankings like golf and tennis.  We will measure each fighter's profile as whole, using fights from a rolling         36-month period, and capping each profile at each individual's best six wins and worst six losses, if they have that many.   It is a format that caters to the "beat the man to be the man" way of thinking where you must beat a specific person in order to move up the ladder.
This type of ranking is common to everyone who is familiar with other major sports, where the rankings/standings are based on the overall consistency of performance, and not based soley on a competitor's last outing.  When "A" beats "B", it does not always result in "A" being ranked higher than "B".  Sometimes "B" still has a better overall recent track record.   In this system, whenever a fighter beats an opponent on a higher or equal tier, they move up a maximum of one more tier than the opponent moves down, until the winner is on a higher tier than the loser.  In cases of draws, the lower-ranked fighter will move up a maximum of one more tier than the higher-ranked fighter moves down, until both fighters are on the same tier.

In both formats, fights are specific to the weight division that reflects each person's weign-in result for that particular match.  The weight divisions are adapted to reflect the slight differences in worldwide fight promotions.
In both formats, if a fighter has not competed in a weight class for more than 3 years, they are removed from the rank and forced to start over if they return to the division.
